University
Library Handbook
The handbook serves a dual
purpose. First, it functions as a
print-based document with information about services offered by PSU’s
University Library. Second, the online
version of the handbook is a set of html links to PSU’s Digital Library
accessible from the University’s home page.

LOCAL AREA LIBRARIES FOR PSU STUDENTS
The Pacific States University Library houses educational materials that support programs offered by the Colleges of Business, Computer Science, and the University’s curriculum for general education. Furthermore, the library offers a variety of other books and reference sources of general interest to undergraduate and graduate students. Currently, a variety of activities are underway at PSU’s University Library (UL) to offer digital services. Description of existing digital library services is available under: Digital Library Services.
Bookstore
The bookstore is located on
the first floor of the University Library. Professors place orders with
the bookstore for textbooks they require for classes they teach each
quarter. The bookstore acquires needed textbooks and makes them available
to students.
Each student is required to
have his or her pink registration slip with him or her when requesting a
textbook from the University Librarian or the Library Assistant.
At
the end of each quarter, the University Librarian requests that professors
complete an Order Form for Textbooks they would need for the following
quarter. The quantity for books needed on the form is an estimate from
the last time each course was taught. Before an order is placed at the
beginning of each quarter, the University Librarian receives an accurate count
of students registered for each course from the University Registrar. The
form is available online by clicking on PSU Digital Library on the university’s
home page and then following the bookstore links for the form. Each
professor delivers or mails his or her completed form to the University
Librarian’s mailbox at PSU. The order
form for textbooks is available under Digital
Library Services.
Strategic
The
Strategic Career Services Center (SCSC) is located on the second floor of the
library building. A variety of career
materials are available for student use.
Among other materials, the SCSC offers books on interview techniques and
guides on resume writing and job hunting.
Any job openings are also kept there and are easily accessible to all
students.
The University Library (UL) houses more than 11,000
volumes and subscribes to over 50 professional journals, periodicals and
newspapers. The UL also receives the
National Trade Data Bank on CD-ROM.
Students
have access to the library’s three Internet stations, as well as to all of the
library’s resources during regular library hours.
The
UL uses the Library of Congress Classification System (LCCS) to organize its
books. Each books has a “call number” on
the spine and books are placed on the shelves in order, according to these
numbers. Call numbers indicate specific
subject areas. The LCCS Index appears
below for reference while browsing for topics.

The
Card Catalog on the first floor lists all of the books and reserved materials
in the library. Catalog cards for all
materials are filed in alphabetical order with most books and reserved
materials having separate entries under author, title and subject. The call number located in the upper
left-hand corner is the key to the location of books in the library. See also Digital Library Services for
development of an Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) to be accessible via the
World Wide Web (WWW).
The
Library has arranged alphabetically the periodicals in the periodical reading
room located in the second floor of the building.
Books
required because of class assignments have limited circulation periods from two
hours to one day. Students must return
reserved books promptly to the circulation desk.
A
link to PSU Digital Library is available on the University’s Home page. So far, the digital library includes links to
the following:
See
the Introduction for more information on the Bookstore and the Textbook order
form. Also, if you are using this
handbook online, the above headings function as hyperlinks as well.
UL’s
Digital Library Services offers connections to many popular search engines on
the World Wide Web (WWW), such as http://www.yahoo.com,
http://www.excite.com, http://www.google.com, and many others. If you are using this handbook online, the
above heading functions as a hyperlink.
Many
hyperlinks to a variety of resources, such as statistics, biographies,
computers, social sciences, and many more, are available if you are using the
online version of the handbook. These
links augment reference services at UL and put our users in charge of their
research. As always, a professional,
reference librarian is available to provide support and to help students and
faculty navigate available research resources online.
See
the Introduction of the handbook for information on the SCSC. Also, the above heading functions as a
hyperlink, if the online version of the handbook is used.
Development
of the OPAC has commenced with an initial conceptual design of an Access
database to house all library book records from the Card Catalog. This project will take approximately one year
to complete and the OPAC will be made available on the WWW for easier access.
